Dash is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency like bitcoin built on open source software. Their system is built on a two-tiered blockchain. The (buzzword alert) decentralized distributed miner network supports transactions and new block creation using proof of work (PoW) while the second tier, Masternodes, handles private (PrivateSend) and instant (InstantSend) transactions along with governance functions. The entire system is incentivized by dividing up the block rewards so that 45% goes to miners and 45% to Masternodes. The remaining 10% is used to fund community projects.
Dash touts itself as user-friendly, fast and inexpensive. The project focus is on being a pure cryptocurrency for financial transactions rather than a platform for apps, storage, or any of the numerous other uses for blockchain technology.
