Huobi Pro’s Swift Move to halt ERC-20 Smartmesh Batchoverflow Bug

April 22 and April 24 were not pleasant days for ERC-20 token holders and Ethereum community in general, as some exchanges suspended trading ERC-20 token due to integer overflow Smartmesh - issue. The smart contract bug - "BatchOverFlow" made many of the ERC-20 Smart Contract tokens vulnerable to manipulations by the attackers. The threat of this bug was so severe that, attackers exploited the vulnerability situation to create an unprecedented number of tokens and deposit in their address.

In a swift response to this ugly incident, Huobi Pro announced the suspension of deposits and withdrawal of all coins on April 25th,2018, to halt further damage. Huobi Pro reviewed the situation and discovered that the bug attack only affected ERC-20 smart contracts. This led to the resumption of withdrawals and deposits of non ERC-20 tokens as stated in their 2nd announcement. Other exchanges such as OKEX, QUOINEX, Changelly.com, HitBTC, and Poloniex took the same step by suspending deposits and withdrawals of all ERC-20 tokens. According to a press statement released via their twitter handle, this suspension is indefinite until the issue is resolved.

Huobi Pro’s wants to use this medium to reiterate their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of their users’ assets. This is what led us to take this prompt action, and we thank you for your understanding and maturity shown so far.

When the story first broke last week, it came as another harsh reminder that crypto is still only in its alpha phase of development. There’s a lot to work out before mainstream adoption.

It will get there no doubt, but there will be more financial casualties along the way.
