About the Author

Michael James Scharen offers five science-fiction novels where the heroes believe in anarchy and the free market. That is not all the books are about, but an underlying theme where anarchy means what it means -- no rulers -- and abiding by the non-aggression principle. There is action, adventure, humor, sarcasm, and plenty of high tech! The books have fun and interesting characters who show us that we can fight the powers that be through reason, ingenuity, counter-economics in the defense of our basic humanity.

Book Catalog

The first two books, Sol is Not Lost and For the Ages take place in the setting where our heroes live in the Breakaway Civilization planets of Magellan and Bering, many light years from Earth. The main character in each is Trevor Van Leeuwan, the head of the Van Leeuwan Corporation. These anarchist colonies were founded by Trevor's great-grandfather, Marcus Aurelius Van Leeuwan approximately a century earlier. Their existence remains a secret as none of the powers that be on Earth could be trusted with such technology. Though well established in another star system, Trevor has many interests in the cradle of humanity -- the Sol system -- such as new oil deposits on the Red Planet. Mars colonization consists of two groups. One group is the the enclave of Earth government research stations and support colonies. Nearby are the New Settlements and the Martian Frontier. The Frontier has no government and does not want one. However, this does not keep the covetous tentacles of Earth governments and their cronies from wanting control of everything they see. The free people who have separated themselves from arbitrary violent hierarchies get help defending themselves from their unseen brethren from another star system.

The Van Leeuwan Trilogy

Three books, The Gifted, The Serendipity Factor, and Treason go back to the beginning when Marcus Aurelius Van Leeuwan conceives of Faster-Than-Light propulsion. Right away he knows he must keep it from the power hungry self-appointed elite. Each book is an excellent stand-alone novel, but best if read in order. These volumes tell of how FTL came to be, the struggles against the nihilists (government believers), and tracks Marcus Aurelius, his brother Hans -Hermann-Hoppe (H-cubed) Van Leeuwan and their allies as they look for a new home among the stars.
